WHY
- I wanted to combine my passion for baking with my passion for service
- I wanted to become a social entrepreneur. I was already making money through my cupcake business, but I wanted that money to have an impact on someone else's life.
- I wanted to really be "part" of the impact. I didn't simply want to donate my money to an NGO, I wanted to be very involved in the "service" aspect of the project.
- Education is a global issue I really believe in, and if there is any issue I would like to invest my money in it is that.
HOW
STEP 1: RESEARCH
1. Learn more about poverty & education in Peru
o Come up with guiding questions for the project. These should be answered by the end if the project.
Some questions:
How many people are living under poverty in Peru?
How many people in Peru go to pre school? Elementary school? Middle school? High school? College?
How many peruvians attend private schools and how many attend private schools?
How many people living in poverty (that have finished high school) go to college? If so, what college do they go to? Otherwise, what do they do after high school?
o Contact NGO's such as TECHO and Crea + to find contact information for different schools
2. Find a group of student that would receive the "grant"
o Determine what type of student I am looking for (intrinsically motivated, talented, leader, passionate, hardworking, caring)
o Come up with questions to ask them
o Meet the students (get to know them, find out their) interests
o Narrow down my search to three students (this remains unanimous to the students)
o Find out how much money I would need to raise to make this possible for ___ years
o Decide on a realistic time spam for the due date of the money (Taking into consideration when the student would start school)
o Find out how much of my cupcake profit would go to this project
Some questions:
If you could be anything when you grow up what would that be?
If you could study anywhere, where would that be?
When do you plan to attend college?
o Film throughout the entire process for footage
3. CREATE A KICKSTART & Launch project
o Create plan for video
o Learn how to use Final Cut Pro
o Finish gathering footage and edit
o Advertise project on Gisella's Cupcake Factory (website, Instagram, FB page)
o Have some sort of magazine write an article to get more donations.
o Create a page on the website explaining what this project is all about. Add a link to kickstart video and edit the "Order" page in such a way that customers can choose how much money they would like to donate.
o Market this project as "Cupcakes for a cause"
4. Once enough money has been raised...
o Surprise student with this grant
o Film all of this for footage in the future.
