By the end of today's class I had realized several things, and one of these was that Randy Sherer is a smart guy. He is a teacher from a school in San Diego known as Hi-Tech High, who came to FDR to lead student and teacher workshops regarding project based learning and design thinking.
Randy made us realize that people have different needs, and our goal for the day was to create a news source that fulfilled each the different needs within our community. In just a few hours, we went through the entire process of creation. We identified what we were doing and why we were doing it, we made it clear who our target audience was and what their needs were, we interviewed our community, organized the collected data, and came up with different ideas for products that would allow us to both provide news, and meet most, if not all of the needs that we had identified earlier in the process.
I also learned that many times we assume things incorrectly. Before Randy came to class, we had assumed that the best way of providing news to our community was through video. It was only after we had interviewed our community and analyzed our data that we realized that most people rather read news than hear about it. An incorrect assumption as small as this one, can completely alter the product one has in mind. To us, it meant going from wanting to transmit news to our community through video to doing it through websites and social media (Instagram).
However, what stood out to me most of this class was that for the first time since I was small, I felt as though what I was learning was relevant and it got me excited. I felt as though I was in kindergarden again; we extended a huge roll of paper on the floor didn't worry about how nice our handwriting was, we were free to think.
