Throughout my American Dream project I've really come to understand the importance of networking. I found that you can learn a lot about a university or a certain topic through books, magazines, and the internet, but you can also learn a lot from people.
As I was researching my dream schools, Mr. Topf told me about an ex student of his from Guatemala that was attending Babson (one of the schools I am highly considering attending). He felt we had a lot in common and connected us through a simple email. And it was through that simple email that I've created a relationship with Paola, who's given me so many valuable resources and information about Babson and about preparing for college.

What I came to realize was that although I learned a lot about Babson through their website and through online resources, the most valuable information I got was the one Paola gave me because it was a true intake about Babson and life at Babson from the perspective of a current student.
So if anything, this month has been a lot about building RELATIONSHIPS with others. I've followed my dream universities on Twitter, tweeted about my findings regarding the colleges of my dreams, and contacted students from different universities to receive answers that go beyond those you can find online.

So many of us--including myself--are always afraid of reaching out to people we don't know. But think about it: if you were a college student and a high scholar emailed you for some advice regarding college, wouldn't you be completely willing to help? I'm pretty sure I would, and I would probably go as far as connecting him/her with other students from my university that he/she may have things in common with. I've learned that reaching out to people shouldn't be something we fear because it is at our nature to want to help others. And who knows? Our relationship with someone may start off by a simple email, but it can develop into a long lasting friendship, a colleague, or even a professional prospect. So lesson learned creating relationships are the catalyst for success.
